April Is Stress Awareness Month!

We hear about stress all the time and ways to avoid it....but do you really know what's happening inside when you harbor this from day to day?? Stress is a normal reaction to everyday pressures, but when it is prolonged there are physiological changes that occur to just about every body system that can be pretty harmful.

Here are a few examples:

  1. Muscle tension

  2. Tension headaches

  3. Chronic pain

  4. Decline in sex drive

  5. Absent/irregular menses

What can you do to de-stress??

Change your way of thinking: a commonly used technique in therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy. This intervention challenges your current way of thinking in order to ultimately change your response to common stressors.

Meditate: mindful meditation is practiced to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. Always save some time for personal "me time", and time to meditate on God's word.

Do what you love: never become so busy that you neglect the things you are most passionate about! This is guaranteed to reduce stress levels.

Nutrition & exercise: Your body is your temple so treat it as such. Chronic stress can cause fat and sugar cravings that can increase risks of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. A simple 30 minutes per day is enough to reduce those risks!

There are so many ways you can deal with stress in a positive way. Tell us about some of your favorite stress-relievers!
